5 Best Places to visit Madrid
Madrid is a city with so much life and culture that it's difficult to do
it justice in a few paragraphs. Artistically, the city can compete with any in
Europe, with one of the best art museums on the continent, showcasing
Renaissance masterworks and seminal 20th-century works.
Take in all of the historical sites and learn about the Spanish Empire,
which spanned the globe in the 16th and 17th centuries. A café con leche in a
stately square, drinks at a rooftop bar, or a stroll through the Retiro or Casa
de Campo on a sunny day are all things that make Madrid memorable.

1. Flamenco tablaos
Flamenco is a dance that originated in Andalusia, Murcia, and Extremadura,
and while it is not strictly native to Madrid, the city does have some of the
country's most famous tablaos. These are special halls that sprung up in the
1960s, where you can watch a show while eating a candlelit meal and drinking
sangria. It's an excellent way to kill two birds with one stone: Tucking into
Spanish specialties like jamón ibérico, migas (fried bread seasoned with
paprika), or roast suckling pig while watching one of the country's most famous
art forms performed by some of the world's best flamenco dancers.
2. A beer on the terrace of a bar
Many of Madrid's bars and restaurants spill out onto the city's
pavements and squares during the summer. This is an important aspect of going
out and socialising in the city. On balmy summer evenings, getting through the
crowd on Plaza de la Cebada can be difficult. Terraces of a different kind can
be found on the rooftops. These bars have spectacular views of the city and are
a great place to watch the sunset. The Hat is close to Plaza Mayor and, like
many of these bars, doesn't give much of an indication of what's on the
rooftop.

3. San Ginés
Spanish hot chocolate is one of the most luxurious things you'll ever
taste, and it's ideal for the winter. It can be so rich and thick that it
requires a spoon to drink. And the perfect accompaniment is a sugary churro,
which is piped dough that is deep-fried. Visit the Chocolatera San Ginés,
located just off the Puerta del Sol, which has been serving churros and hot
chocolate since the 19th century and does it as well as any other joint in
town. If you can't make it to San Ginés, there are plenty of stalls on the
streets during the cooler months.
4. Reina Sofia Museum
The third museum on the Golden Triangle completes your tour of Madrid's
art collections. This museum is more modern in scope than the others and
focuses primarily on Spanish art. The many works by 20th-century artists Picasso
and Dal are the best reason to visit. To demonstrate that this isn't overkill,
Picasso's epochal Guernica is on display, so this is an opportunity you should
not pass up. Joan Miró, Juan Gris, and the important abstract sculptor Eduardo
Chillida are among the other Spanish greats represented at Reina Sofa.

5. El Rastro
On Sundays, Ribera de Coritodores and Plaza de Cascorro will appear to
be overrun with people. This is when 3,500 stalls open, selling pretty much
anything you can think of, new or used. It's Madrid's largest flea market and
can get quite crowded, so it's always a good idea to arrive early. Even though
it's a Sunday, the antique shops on the streets branching off Ribera de
Cortidores will be open, and there are cafes if you need a break from the
crowds.
